Why STEM and Me?

Background

Hello first readers! STEM and Me came about as a name after endless pondering and drafts. To be completely honest, I didn’t think it would stick for long, but here we are, already on a subscription to keep this name. I believe that STEM is such a vast and everchanging field, it’s a different adventure for everyone. Maybe you knew you wanted to be a scientist or a doctor since you were a child, or maybe, like me, you found the passion later in life. This journey looks different for everyone, which is why this blog is a reflection of my own personal voyage through learning, exams and personal areas of interest as I venture into the world of STEM.

Influences

Aside from the growing interest into the field, the name also has origins to my childhood. Growing up, one of my favourited cartoons was “Mia and Me”, an animation telling the story of a young girl that travels to a far away fantasy land to help defeat and evil witch. She is unique from other elves in this land as she is able to communicate and befriend unicorns, the ones hunted by the evil witch in her pursue of eternal youth.

A very captivating and educational story for 7 year old me, it taught me much about trusting your friends as well as not giving up when times are hard, but most of all, it taught me that being true to yourself is a very important virtue. In a way, it paved the way for me to pursue the true career I was interested in, rather than one provided to me by the people around.

It also kickstarted my love for the unknown and the unexplainable. Ever since then, sci-fi and fantasy media has been my favourite, from unicorn fantasy to Star Wars, Astro boy and X-men, I will always enjoy a well told story about the extraordinary; it even fuelled my aspirations into untangling some of the universe’s own unexplainable.

The Future

I plan to write for as long as I have something to say, which to the people know me, means forever, but in truth, balancing studies, a social life and such a time-consuming hobby like writing, is very difficult and frankly unrealistic. Which is why my posts will probably be few and far in between as I approach exam season, university applications and other stressful time periods. I have yet to decide if this blog will be pursued after I finish my A Levels, but I hope even my short time on the web will inspire more emerging students and academics into pursuing their own writing and sharing of their stories.
